Wingates Band Seek New Musical Director
Wingates Band is seeking a successor to its current Musical Director, Mr Paul Andrews, who, after a successful 9 years, is stepping down from his position with the band.
The band is requesting applications from individuals who possess effective leadership, communication and interpersonal skills and have experience managing higher section brass bands, including preparing concert and contest performances.
This is a rare opportunity to conduct a first-class, hard-working band with a rich history and strong ties to the community.
The band would like to take this opportunity to thank Paul for all of his hard work, dedication and friendship over the last 9 years. His influence, knowledge and experience led the band to compete at a range of high-level contests, including the British Open, Scottish Open, National Finals, Brass in Concert (for the first time in the band’s history), as well as provide an excellent experience for our audiences at concerts.
About the Band
Basing our selves on the principles of history, quality and innovation, Wingates Band is a forward-thinking band who aims to introduce new audiences to brass band music with engaging programmes and unite the community through music-making, as well as strive for musical excellence in contest performances.
The band will be celebrating 150 years in 2023 and has a strong relationship with the local community, demonstrated through a wealth of community events, being a recipient of a commemorative ‘blue plaque’ to celebrate the link between the band and the community and a dedication to the band on local boundary road signs in the area. The successful candidate will continue to further this bond through the suggestion of new events and creating enjoyable performances in the local area.
About the Role
The Band is now looking for a new Musical Director who can take Wingates Band forward in the next chapter of its history. The trustees of the Band are looking for an individual who can be seen as a positive role model and commit to the development of the band and its players.
The band is made up of hard-working, dedicated and friendly players that celebrate the gift of playing and performing together. The new MD will be encouraged to nurture these gifts and, in doing so, will guarantee the engagement of its players and an investment in the band’s future.
The successful candidate will be committed to preparing and directing 2-hour rehearsals, twice a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays), selecting concert programmes and preparing the band for concert and contest performances.In addition, the MD should be able to make innovative suggestions to encourage new audiences to listen and follow the band.
As the Band are currently in a rebuilding phase and are recovering from the effects of the pandemic, the MD will be asked to assist with the recruitment process, encouraging new players who may wish to join the Band.
This is a busy role, but it is strongly supported by a full, working Management Committee, which includes posts to cover all aspects of band work, i.e:
- Band Manager
- Librarian
- Contest Secretary
- Marketing Manager
- Transport Coordinator
- Media Manager

The Band can offer a fixed, yearly remuneration or a monthly fee, based on the activities completed in the month.
